Beyond the Crowds: Why North Bali Is the Ultimate Destination for a Private Bali Retreat

For many travellers, the words Bali retreat conjure images of infinity pools, yoga classes, and somewhere quiet to breathe again. What fewer people know is that the Bali most visitors experience, the busy streets of Seminyak, the café rows of Canggu, the temple queues of Ubud, represents only a fraction of what the island actually is.

North Bali is another place entirely. Quieter, cooler, and largely untouched by the kind of tourism that has changed the south beyond recognition. Munduk Moding Plantation sits in the highlands above Gobleg village, at around 1,200 metres above sea level, surrounded by a working organic coffee plantation, misty valleys, and views that stretch all the way to the sea.

For anyone who has started to wonder what Bali looked like before it became a bucket-list destination, this is the answer.

What Makes North Bali Different

The south of Bali has a lot to offer, and it has earned its popularity. But popularity brings consequences. Roads fill up, and many visitors visit the same place at once. The sense of discovery that many come for can be hard to find when the same spots appear on every travel list.

North Bali was historically the administrative and cultural centre of the island, and it shows. The temples here are older and less visited. The villages still follow a pace of life shaped by agriculture, ceremony, and seasons rather than tourist arrivals. Local markets run in the early morning for local people. Coffee farmers tend their trees the same way they have for generations.

Staying at Munduk Moding Plantation

Munduk Moding Plantation began as an abandoned five-hectare coffee plantation in 2007. Brought here by the landscape and by a meeting with a local hospitality graduate, the resort was developed sensitively, working closely with the villages of Gobleg and Munduk and drawing on the talents of Bali’s own celebrated architects Popo Danes and Era Anastasia.

Today the resort’s villas and suites range from garden-view luxury suites to multi-bedroom pool villas with private jacuzzis, all designed to sit within the landscape rather than sit on top of it. The award-winning infinity pools, recognised among Asia Spa’s top ten, overlook valleys that seem to stretch endlessly into the distance.

Food That Belongs to the Place

Dining at Munduk Moding is inseparable from the setting. MiMPi Restaurant serves refined farm-to-table Balinese cuisine shaped by the plantation’s own gardens and the seasons of North Bali. The six-course Discovery Menus, curated and served by the head chef, have become one of the most talked-about dining experiences in the region.

Warung Bongkot brings the flavours of traditional North Bali to a more relaxed setting, while the Sunset Bar makes it easy to do nothing at all except watch the light change over the valley. The full dining experience at MMP is one reason many guests find themselves staying longer than planned.

Coffee at the Source

One of the most distinctive things about a stay at MMP is the coffee. Munduk Coffee is grown, processed, and roasted on-site at approximately 1,200 metres above sea level, a microclimate the Dutch identified as ideal for coffee cultivation when they introduced the crop to the region in the 19th century. Cherries are hand-picked when they reach their deepest crimson, typically between July and September.

Guests can follow the entire journey from cherry to cup through roasting and cupping sessions included in the MMP Experience Programme. The plantation also produces a small quantity of ethically sourced wild Luwak coffee, collected from free-roaming Asian palm civets in the surrounding forest, a stark contrast to the caged production methods found elsewhere on the island.

Getting Into the Landscape

North Bali rewards people who want to actually go somewhere. MMP’s activities programme covers hiking trails to waterfalls and mountain lakes, mountain cycling through villages and plantations, and horseback rides through lush hills with guides who know the land well. For those wanting curated exploration, the team can build bespoke itineraries that take in ancient temples, cultural villages, and landscapes that remain largely off the tourist radar.

For rest rather than movement, the Bamboo Spa offers Balinese massage treatments, an infrared sauna, and yoga sessions set in the middle of the jungle. The cool highland air makes yoga practice unusually comfortable at any time of day.

Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort for Your Ultimate North Bali Retreat

A Bali retreat is easy to find. A genuinely private, restorative, and meaningful one is rarer. North Bali offers conditions that the south has largely moved away from: space, quiet, authentic community, and a landscape that has not been rearranged for visitors.

MMP’s approach to tourism is rooted in the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which seeks harmony between people, the environment, and the spiritual world. We also hold Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Awards for 2024 and 2025, a 9.5 on Booking.com, a World Luxury Hotel Award, and recognition from Green and eco-tourism certification bodies. These reflect our consistent experience that has been built over the years.

If you are ready to plan your stay, the team is happy to help you design an experience that fits. Get in touch, and we would be glad to welcome you to the highlands.
